Buckden Towers
Site Accessibility
This is a period site and, as such, is not uniformly accessible. However, various efforts have been made to improve the accessibility for SCA events.
Parking
There is ample parking on tarmac at the site which has hard, level access to the social spaces of the site.
Fighting Spaces
Fighting will take place outdoors on the field behind the Main House, which is accessible for combatants and spectators, as it has level access from the social areas of the site. In poor weather, spectators can watch from inside the Main House, or from the shelter of the covered corridor linking the Great Tower to the Main House.
Social Spaces
There are a number of indoor spaces available for use during the daytime. The majority ground floor of the Main House with level access is used as a social space, including the Refectory and Conference Room (the Low Feast Hall), which look out over the field and will likely offer a view of the Tournament from indoors.
The Parlour offers further level access indoor day space, as does the Entrance Hall where the Registration Desk is usually sited.
The Meeting Room and bathroom facilities on the ground floor are accessed via a ramp, made specifically for this purpose and gifted to the site by Baron Meliton.
The Lounge and Library are located on the first floor of the Main House, accessible via a wide, shallow staircase. The Lounge is appropriate for meetings, and the Library is customarily reserved for the Royal Room.
Court
The Great Tower Kings Room (High Feast Hall) is accessed by five shallow steps which are rough and uneven. These steps have a hand rail. This is the traditional space for Court and Feast at Buckden Towers. The Kings Room is available for use during the day time.
Feast
Feast is served in the Great Tower Kings Room (High Feast Hall) and the Conference Room (Low Feast Hall).
The Kings Room in the Great Tower is accessed by five steps which are rough and uneven. These steps have a hand rail. The Conference Room in the Main House is more accessible with level access via the Entrance Hall.
Other meals are served in the Refectory on the ground floor of the Main House.
Kitchen areas
The Tower kitchen can be accessed by going down a spiral staircase or via an external ramp and a couple of steps once indoors. Only kitchen staff require access to this area.
