It used the adjacent device. There was an attempt to register the name and device through the Kingdom of the East, but the name was finally returned in September 1986 as “The collocation of the term ‘Hold’ and the epithet of Richard Lionheart suggested too strongly that this was one of Richard’s royal castles.” The device was judged “to be excessively complex and poor style to a degree which should not be accepted for group arms which precedent indicates of should set an example”.

The name of Flintheath was registered in February 1989 via the Kingdom of the East as at that time Drachenwald was still a Principality of that Kingdom. Drachenwald only became a Kingdom in its own right in 1993. The adjacent device was registered to the Shire in November 1994.
